The greatest thing that ever happened for network and MLM marketing businesses is the Internet. The Internet has transformed the way that network marketers do business, and for the better for all concerned.
There was a time, not all that long ago, when network marketing had to include some very uncomfortable activities. People who were brought into a network marketing business were taught to try to sell the products and the opportunity first to their family and friends. The idea was that these were "warm leads", people who were the most likely to be persuaded to buy because they trusted and cared about the network marketer. But, just as with selling life insurance using the same strategy, this usually didn't go according to plan.
As we all know, most people are uncomfortable trying to sell to those that they've long known but never had a business relationship with before. There's a level of fakery to the whole approach. Then, the family members and the friends usually resent the idea that they are really supposed to buy. They are happy to give a meeting so that the new network marketer can "practice" and because they are naturally curious about what she's doing, but they have no intention of "giving in" and buying products or joining any business. The network marketer almost always has a totally different attitude from her family and friends, which is why she is the one who sought the opportunity, and not them.
Knowing this, the best network marketers, just like the most successful life insurance salesmen, figured out how to, well, network in order to get build their business. Traditional networking means getting involved in various organizations with people of like minds, and then using those relationships that are created there as entry points into being able to talk to people about the opportunity. These people are different than family and friends because they have already cultivated a personal but more professional-like relationship with the network marketer, and they already definitely share some cause or interest. The marketer is thus trusted and the approach about the business is seen as, at least, a generously offered opportunity rather than an affront.
Networking is also the way to get the all-important referrals. When one person joins the business, they then network with and refer others into the business, building their downline and the upline to their recruiter.
However, networking takes up a lot of time. It takes quite a while to build up the relationships, and a while to join the organizations if the marketer doesn't already have memberships in some. It can also cost quite a pretty penny for things like travel and membership fees. This is where the power of the Internet makes things so much better for the network marketer.
With network marketing on the Internet, joining networks is free and much, much faster than it ever was before. The networking venues that are used include things like Twitter,Facebook, Digg, and Stumble Upon among many others. All of these sites are free and easy to join and use.
Then, there is the matter of the fact that when you, as a network marketer, use social networking sites on the Internet, you are getting outreach to millions of people all at once. You don't have to approach every single person one on one. They read about or watch videos about you opportunity and your business, and they decide to contact you to learn more information. By using an opt-in e-mail list and an autoresponder, you can sign up many, many people to your downline without even needing to meet with them or call them. And, if someone is not in your neighborhood, today we have webcams and the technology of virtual online meeting programs like WebEx.
With the Internet, you have so much more outreach as a network marketer that it's truly amazing. You can sign up people faster, at less expense, and from all across the country. Use the Internet to build your network marketing business and you are sure to achieve the success you desire.
